Tips To Get Your Garbage Disposal Working Properly

Your garbage disposal is an appliance you may have been taking for granted for some time. Using it day after day without a care. You may have been neglecting this small appliance for some time as well, not cleaning it out, never sharpening the blades, or even checking that the motor is functioning properly. Just turning on the switch to engage the motor, then back off again like clockwork after every meal. If your disposal suddenly stops working though, you may begin to change those ways. Your disposal needs care and maintenance, much like any other large or small appliance in your home. If your disposal is not working, there may be a few things you can do to get it working properly again.

Check For Clogs

You should check the disposal to see if anything is clogged inside the drain opening. If there is, you may be able to reach inside to remove it with your hands, but you need to first turn off the power to the appliance. Turn it off at the fuse box, or simply unplug it. Leaving it off at the switch may still allow some movement in the appliance once the clog is removed. Carefully reach inside to remove the clogged item, then plug the disposal back in, or reset the fuse. Then test the appliance again. Be sure hard items such as silverware, bones, cobs and other hard items do not go down the drain, as they will not be able to break down in the disposal and can create problems for you.

Test For Power

If the disposal has no power and there are no clogs, it may be a power supply issue. Check that the fuse is set and did not pop. Also, test the outlet that the disposal is plugged into for power. If these things are not the issue, it may be a power issue within the motor. Replacing the motor may be costly and replacing the entire disposal may be the best option, especially if it's an older disposal. You can hire a professional plumber to replace your motor or the appliance for you.

If your garbage disposal is not working properly or has ceased working altogether, it may be time for a new one. Use the information above to help you make the repair yourself, but if you have no luck, you should hire a plumber to help you make the repair or to replace the appliance altogether.
